Iowa State Sweeps UNI in Waterloo

WATERLOO, Iowa – Iowa State snagged its first, long-awaited win of the season today when the Cyclones blanked Northern Iowa 7-0 this afternoon. The win improves Iowa State's record to 1-7 and drops UNI to 6-4.

“It feels good to have that first win,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “It was long overdue. We've had a lot of close 4-3 matches, and this time the breaks went our way.”

Iowa State controlled two of the three doubles spots, and the momentum from the squad's first doubles win of the season translated over into their singles play.

“Simona (Cacciuttolo) and Ksenia (Pronina) did a great job at two, and Tessa (Lang) and Marie-Christine Chartier started really well and finished strong at three,” Espinosa said. “It was great to finish it out and it gave us a little more confidence going into singles.”

At No. 3 singles, Simona Cacciuttolo overtook Jessica Kunzelmann scoring 7-6, 6-2 and Meghan Cassens controlled No. 4 6-5, 6-3 over Chelsea Moore.

Every singles match went to Iowa State in two sets, and Espinosa said that winning these close games was key to help the team shut out UNI's momentum.

“This year, we've had close calls where we lost in the third match,” Espinosa noted. “Today, we took the momentum away from them when we won in two.”

Maria Fernanda Macedo, who represents Iowa State in the No. 1 spot, captured her first duals win of the season when she downed Nina Pfhaler 6-2, 6-1.

“It was great to see Maria win today,” Espinosa said. “She has got the game, and this gave her a little more confidence going into the rest of the season.”

With today's win under their belts, the Cyclones have a few days off before jetting off to Honolulu, Hawaii to face Eastern Michigan and Hawaii this week.
