IRVING, Texas - Iowa State distance standout Betsy Saina has been named the Indoor Track and Field Outstanding Female Performer of the Year, announced by the Big 12 Conference Thursday afternoon. The post-season award is voted on by the league's track and field coaches.
Saina defended her title in the 5000-meter race while also tabbing the 3000-meter crown at the Big 12 Indoor Championships last weekend in College Station, Texas. Saina battled both races against Texas A&M's Natosha Rogers, but surged through the end of the contests to pick up her second and third Big 12 indoor championship individual titles. Saina broke the Gilliam Indoor Stadium record in the 5000-meters with her 15:50.20 mark. She bested her previous time from a year ago by nearly 30 seconds.
She joins Lisa Koll (2010) as the only other Cyclone to sweep the 3000 and 5000-meter runs.
Saina will compete in the 3000 and 5000-meter runs at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9-10 in Boise, Idaho.
