Sorenson Reflects On Cyclone Career

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State wrestler Andrew Sorenson exemplifies the longstanding tradition of Cyclone wrestling toughness. As the team captain, Sorenson has led his squad throughout the 2011-12 season on and off the mat.
On the mat, Sorenson takes a 25-1 overall record into the 2012 Big 12 Championships Saturday. The Woden, Iowa native has scored bonus points in 13 victories, which include five technical falls, five pins and three major decisions.
Off the mat, Sorenson was named to the 2012 Academic All-Big 12 team for maintaing a 3.20 or better GPA. The redshirt senior is currently working toward his graduate degree in higher education.
Ranked fourth in the country at 165 pounds, Sorenson and his head coach Kevin Jackson have high expectations for not only the Big 12 Championships but also the NCAA Championships March 15-17 in St. Louis, Mo.
Sorenson's senior campaign is highlighted by a championship performance at the 2011 Harold Nichols Cyclone Open in which he scored bonus points in all four of his victories. At the 2011 Midlands Championships, Sorenson finished fifth overall and scored bonus points in two victories. Sorenson also earned back-to-back technical falls over winter break in Iowa State's duals against Arizona State and Missouri.
On Senior Day, Sorenson ignited the Cyclone faithful in the final match against Cornell with a 21-6 technical fall for an emotional curtain call. Sorenson scored his final takedown of the match in the final seconds to secure the technical fall.
Most recently, the Iowa State graduate student secured his 90th career victory with an 8-3 decision over Joe Latham of Oregon State at the NWCA National Duals Midwest Regional Feb. 12 in Hilton Coliseum. In the first round of the duals, Sorenson avenged his only loss against Ben Jordan of Wisconsinin with a 3-2 decision.
