Loy Runs to 1,500-Meter Mt. SAC Title

WALNUT, Calif. – The Iowa State track and field team kicked of a busy week of competition with Rico Loy running to the 1,500-meter title on the first day of the Mt. SAC Relays inside Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Posting a time of 3:43.18, Loy paced the field of 121 runners to win the third of 11 heats and capture the event title in the 1,500-meter run. After taking the lead with about 900-meters left in heat three, Loy crossed the finish line about 50 meters in front of David Edwards, competing for Team BSK. Loy's previous personal-best time in the 1,500-meters came in 2010 where he would win the event at Drake Relays in 3:45.27.

The multi-event athletes kicked off the weekend Wednesday afternoon with the decathlon and heptathlon competitions. Competing in the 'A' section of the decathlon, Cyclone Ethan Wilkins recorded 7,038 points, with personal best marks in the 400-meter dash (49.23) and the long jump (23-02.00). This was Wilkins' first complete decathlon at the Division-I level. Jamal Currica, competing in the 'B' section of the decathlon, recorded a personal best 6,766 points after setting personal best marks in the shot put (40-11.75) and the pole vault (13-09.25).

The Mt. SAC Relays continue Friday for Iowa State with the men's hammer throw scheduled to begin at noon CDT. The Cyclones will also continue action at the Bryan Clay Invitational with the men's 1,500-meter run scheduled to run at 12:20 p.m. CDT.

Live results are available for the Mt. SAC Relays, and Flotrack will be providing live coverage of the meet from 7:50-11:40 p.m. CDT. Results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of the day's events.
