DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake Fall Invitational's second day of action wrapped up Saturday afternoon.
Senior Jenna Langhorst started her bracket off right, ousting South Dakota's Michelle Elkin 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. Langhorst then went on to play Mariel Ante of the Drake Bulldogs, and suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss. To wrap up the weekend's competition, she will face off against UNO's Lindsay Weldemann in the consolation match.
Ellie Nixon, who continued competing in the Round Robin singles bracket, took the fall against Drake's Amanda Dick. Nixon was ousted 6-1, 6-1 in her first matchup of the day, but went on to capture her next match against Sarah Boyd of Northern Illinois. Nixon defeated Boyd 6-1, 6-3.
Emma Waites, Iowa State's sole junior at the tournament, fell in a three-set contest against Northern Illinois' Stephanie McDonald. Waites was outscored 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Tomorrow, Waites will face Nina Barudzic of South Dakota to advance in her consolation bracket.
Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa noted how the debut fall tournament has helped the Cyclones define areas to work on as the fall progresses.
"I think overall it's been a good couple of days for us," he said. "We've learned that we need to keep our attitudes and energy up throughout the matches, because those aspects can really give us an edge."
The final day of action at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center will begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
