WATERLOO, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team will look to continue its early success from the fall season this weekend at the UNI Invitational after seeing some good outcomes last weekend.
Iowa State freshmen Samantha Budai and Lydia Green had strong performances at last weekend's Gopher Invitational. Budia and Green both ended the weekend with third-place finishes in their brackets during their first weekend of collegiate competition.
“The fact that the two freshmen finished third, winning three matches out of their four singles, that was a good start,” said head coach Armando Espinosa. “I think mostly it was important for them to get their feet wet.”
Espinosa is looking forward to the team getting more doubles action and making some changes in hopes of improvement from the Cyclones.
“We still need to figure out who is playing with whom and match up their strengths,” said Espinosa. “We're excited. It's another tournament and another opportunity to get better.”
The Cyclones will face teams from Bradley, Green Bay, Illinois State, St. Louis, St. Catherine's, Upper Iowa and Western Illinois for the first time this fall. ISU will also see some familiar foes in Drake, Milwaukee, South Dakota and tournament host UNI.
Iowa State will begin singles and doubles play this Friday in Waterloo at both the Black Hawk Tennis Club and Byrnes Park.
