AMES, Iowa- Iowa State tennis will kick off the spring season this Friday in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Cyclones will take on the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles in their first match of the year at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The match will start at 12 p.m.
Iowa State ended the fall at the University of Houston's Cougar Classic in November, where Ksenia Pronina, Emma Waites, and Samantha Budai all brought home third-place finishes. After a two-month-long break, the team is ready to get back on the courts.
“I really think that the way our season is broken down, after a month of hiatus to come back and play that early, it makes it tough,” head coach Armando Espinosa said, “But if you don't come back that early, then you're setting yourself up for an even tougher season.”
Though the team is excited to get back outside, the weather will be a tough factor in Florida.
“The ball is going to travel slower because of the humidity,” Espinosa said. “You're going to have to play a different style of game. It's nice that we'll be there early enough to practice so that the team can realize that they're going to have to be more patient.”
The Cyclones will also compete in the FGCU Invite starting Saturday. Also playing this weekend will be FGCU, Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic University, and Northwestern State University of Louisiana. Singles matches will begin Saturday at 8 a.m.
