AMES, Iowa- Iowa State Tennis (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) defeated North Dakota, 7-0, on Friday at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The Cyclones are undefeated at home this season.
The Cyclones got the ball rolling in doubles with wins from all three pairs. Junior Ksenia Pronina and freshman Samantha Budai earned a 6-3 win over UND's Stephanie Petsis and Lacey Sprinkel at No. 1 doubles. Senior Emma Waites and junior Caroline Andersen defeated Mikaela Bennet and Stephanie Biehn at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, claiming the point for the Cyclones. At the No. 2 spot, junior Meghan Cassens and sophomore Ana Gasparovic finished the doubles matches with a win over Mikaela Bennet and Stephanie Biehn, 6-3.
“They made us play,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “The match was 7-0, but it could have easily been 4-3. I was happy with how it turned out but more so pleased with how North Dakota made us play.”
Pronina kicked off singles by taking down Petsis at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 4 spot, Gasparovic defeated Biehn, 6-2, 6-3.
Despite the solid start, North Dakota made the Cyclones work hard for singles points, with three of six matches ending in a ten-point super break. Cassens came back to take the win over Sprinkel at the No. 3 spot, 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (3). Budai also came back from behind in No. 2 singles to defeat Callie Ronkowski, 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (6). Freshman Lydia Green fought a hard comeback over Faith Lee, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (2).
“Being able to win those three-setters was important,” Espinosa said. “Who knows, if they had taken a couple of the tie-breakers, it could have been really up in the air. The competition was very good.”
Senior Emma Waites finished out the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No.6 singles over Bennet.
Next up, Iowa State will head to Milwaukee, Wisc. to take on Marquette next Friday.
