Gadson, Moreno and Hall Take Home Hardware

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Iowa State wrestling team (9-7 overall, 1-2 Big 12) sits tied for 11th in the team race with Northwestern after the conclusion of Session V of the 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Two-time All-Americans Kyven Gadson and Michael Moreno each went 1-1 en route to fourth and fifth place finishes on the medal stand, respectively.
Gadson started the morning with a bang, scoring a second period fall in 3:24 over
NCAA-semifinalist Chris Penny of Virginia Tech, scoring 5.5 team points for the Cyclones.
In the third-place match, Gadson was pitted against a familiar foe in Minnesota All-American Scott Schiller. Gadson got behind early, and his late comeback fell short as he lost 9-6. He is 10-5 all-time at the NCAA Championships with a fourth-place finish this season and a sixth-place finish last season.
The Waterloo, Iowa, native finished the year 30-4, picking up career win No. 60 this morning when he pinned Penny.
Moreno dropped his first match of the day to No. 3 seed Nick Sulzer of Virginia but was able to bounce back and take fifth-place, a spot higher than his 2013 NCAA finish, after beating The Citadel's Turtogtokh Luvsandorj 9-3 with 2:10 of riding time.
The Urbandale, Iowa, native is now 10-5 all-time at the NCAA Championships with two top-six finishes. Moreno ends the year with overall record of 31-9.
The All-American tandem of Gadson and Moreno is now a combined 122-29 the last two seasons on the mat.
Earl Hall lost a heartbreaker in the seventh-place bout to unseeded Darian Cruz of Lehigh, falling 2-1 in the second tiebreak period. Hall became just the second ISU 125-pounder to earn All-America honors since the first year of the weight class in 1999.
Hall, a sophomore from Homestead, Fla., posted a 3-3 record at his first NCAA Championship to finish the year with an overall record of 21-15. He knocked off three seeded wrestlers in the tournament, including No. 4 Josh Martinez of Air Force.
The final session of the 2014 NCAA Championships begins tonight at 7 p.m. live on ESPN. No. 1 Chris Perry (Oklahoma State) and No. 2 Andrew Howe (Oklahoma) will be the first title bout.For updated brackets and team standings, click here.
