AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team (8-10, 0-6 Big 12) will head to Oklahoma this weekend to take on No. 22 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Oklahoma in more Big 12 competition.
The Cyclones are set to face the Cowgirls Friday at 5 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma State currently holds the top spot in Big 12 standings, and enters the weekend on a five-match winning streak. Last Sunday, the Cowgirls defeated then-No. 61 Kansas State, 5-2, in Manhattan.
“We're playing two great teams,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are ranked pretty closely and they're [top three] in the Big 12, but if we keep doing what we're supposed to do then we're going to have a shot at some wins.”
The Sooners beat Kansas State, 6-1, last Friday in Manhattan before taking down Kansas, 7-0, last Sunday in Lawrence. They are currently in third place in the Big 12.
Despite the success of both opponents, Espinosa thinks that his team has every chance to add two wins to its Big 12 record this weekend.
“I think we are playing better at certain spots, I think it's just a matter of believing in ourselves,” Espinosa said. “I know it's difficult with the matter of what the team has gone through in the number of matches we've lost recently. As long as we are still doing what we're supposed to be doing on the court I think we're going to have an opportunity.”
Play will begin this Friday at 5 p.m. in Stillwater. Sunday's contest in Norman will start at noon.
