AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team will kick off the 2015 season on Saturday at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational in Ft. Myers, Fla. The team will compete in singles and doubles play through Monday.
With the recent frigid temperatures in Ames, the team has not been able to get in any practice outdoors. They are looking forward to the Florida weather as a chance to prepare for upcoming spring matches.
“It's going to be nice, even though kind of in the morning it feels a little bit chilly, but during the day it's going to be hot and probably humid,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We're looking forward to that because that will prepare us for the spring a little bit, getting out of the cold.”
The Cyclones last saw the courts in early November at the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational in Houston. Espinosa is hoping this weekend will allow the team to get used to playing competitive tennis again before dual match play begins for the spring.
“I think that the biggest challenge is getting acclimated,” Espinosa said. “It's going to be difficult, conditioning-wise and just striking the ball, it's going to be tough. I don't really have any expectations as to how people are going to do, just kind of preparing ourselves to play lots of matches and just realistically get geared up for the dual match season.”
Overall, Espinosa hopes that his team can play a lot of matches and try to stay healthy.
“That would be probably the biggest goal,” Espinosa said. “Hit a lot of balls, get the rust out, and start competing without really a team score.”
