AMES, Iowa - Iowa State picked up its third Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honor of the 2014-15 season, as 174-pounder Tanner Weatherman received the recognition, the league office announced this afternoon.
The No. 11-ranked Cyclone drew a standing ovation from the 5,603 Cardinal and Gold fans in attendance with a come-from-behind victory over Virginia Tech's No. 9-ranked Zach Epperly. Weatherman's win was part of a five-match streak that anchored Iowa State's upset of the No. 6 Hokies.
After a scoreless first period, Weatherman took a 1-0 lead on an escape after choosing to start the second stanza down. Epperly took Weatherman down late in the period, as the Huxley, Iowa, native was able to tie the match back up at 2-2 with another escape before the period expired.
Epperly picked up an escape to start the final 2 minutes, and Weatherman was unable to get on the offensive until the final seconds. With 10 seconds left on the clock, Weatherman snagged a single-leg and was able to convert and ride out the final 6 seconds to take the match.
The victory is Weatherman's second over the No. 9-ranked Epperly this season, taking the only other meeting between the two grapplers earlier this season at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in a 3-2 decision.
Weatherman is the third Cyclone grappler to receive the conference accolade, joining teammates Kyven Gadson (Dec. 8) and Earl Hall (Jan. 6). Iowa State's three Wrestler-of-the-Week selections are also tied for the most in the conference this season (Oklahoma State, 3).
Weatherman and the ISU wrestling team return to the mat Sunday, as the squad opens Big 12 competition against No. 8 Oklahoma State in Hilton Coliseum. Wrestling is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. CT.
