AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team (6-12-0, 0-8-0 Big 12) fell to No. 18 Texas Tech (10-3-5, 3-2-3 Big 12) at the Cyclone Sports Complex on Friday evening to finish out the season. The Red Raiders held the Cyclones scoreless, winning 2-0.
After 45 minutes of play, the Red Raiders lead the Cyclones 1-0 at the half. Iowa State struggled to keep up offensively as TTU's Ashley Casey buried a shot in the net with an assist from Rebekah O'Brien in the 34th minute. TTU outshot Iowa State in the half 11-9 and 6-0 on goal.
Though the Cyclones put two shots up early in the second half, they weren't able to connect. Texas Tech continued to build momentum in the 63rd minute as Gwinnie Puente broke away from the defender and buried the ball in the net, bringing the Red Raider's lead to 2-0.
Coach Said It
“That was one of the best college soccer games I've seen this year. Unfortunately we were on the losing end of that, but it was just a great game. We came out firing. We were taking good shots. We were getting good in the attack. We were defending hard. You miss one in the box and then they come back on the counter and get one in. That's unfortunate because we should put that one away inside 18. Second half I thought we were all over them. We had great attack, we were keeping good possession of the ball and then we make that mistake in the back to give them that second goal. It's tough to dig out of that when you're playing a team that's been in the top 25 the majority of the year.”
On the seniors: “All in all everything they did from the little things of getting the uniforms for the trips and what they're going to wear to pregame speeches and things like that. They're two really quality individuals and they're going to go really far in life with they've learned and what they've been able to grow through here.”
