AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's women's basketball team (1-0 overall, 0-0 Big 12) opened the 2015-16 campaign with a 95-59 victory over Hampton (0-1) at Hilton Coliseum on Friday. Freshman Bridget Carleton led the way for Iowa State with 28 points, an ISU freshman career debut record.
The Cyclones got a balanced scoring effort beyond Carleton's big night, as Seanna Johnson and Jadda Buckley each put up 11 points. Bryanna Fernstrom was the fourth ISU player in double figures with 10. Carleton also led the way on the glass, with 11 rebounds, followed by 10 for Johnson. Iowa State out-rebounded Hampton 45-28 on the night.
How it Happened…
Seanna Johnson paced the Cyclones in the early going, scoring seven points in the opening quarter while connecting on both of her attempts from the field and three free throw attempts. The first 10 minutes were back-and-forth, as the Pirates knocked down three treys in the opening stanza. Hampton took a 17-13 lead prior to five-straight points by Johnson to close out the quarter. She converted on an and-1 opportunity to give ISU an 18-17 lead after one.
The Cyclones would use another late run at the end of the second quarter to pull away for good. With a 30-25 lead and just 3:47 to go in the first half, Carleton hit a three-pointer to spark a 17-4 ISU run, giving Iowa State a 49-30 lead at the intermission. The offensive flurry included five makes from beyond the arc, including two each from Carleton and Buckley. Carleton posted 12 points and six boards in the opening half to lead all scorers, followed by Buckley with 11.
The offensive onslaught continued in the third quarter, as the Cyclones put up 30 points in the 10-minute stanza. Carleton would continue to pour it on, scoring 16 more after the break, despite not playing the majority of the fourth quarter. In total, Iowa State shot a scorching 56.7 percent from the field, including 12-of-24 from three-point range.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…
Bridget Carleton. The freshman had herself a memorable opening night in her Cyclone debut, pouring in the 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 5-of-11 from deep. Carleton also did work on the glass, grabbing 11 boards, as well as dishing out four assists in the contest.
