AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's women's basketball team closed out its exhibition slate with a 77-51 win over Concordia-St. Paul Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. ISU won both of its exhibition games in preparation of the Cyclones' season-opener Friday against Hampton at 7 p.m. inside Hilton.
Seanna Johnson led five Cyclones in double figures with 14 points. Joining her were Jadda Buckley (12), Bryanna Fernstrom (11), Meredith Burkhall (10) and Emily Durr (10). Kidd Blaskowsky posted 11 rebounds, helping lead Iowa State to a 57-43 advantage on the glass.
How it Happened…
The Cyclone defense rose to the occasion to help spark the offense as steals by Kidd Blaskowsky and Seanna Johnson led to a pair of fast-break lay-ins by Jadda Buckley to get ISU ahead 7-2 four minutes into the first quarter. Neither team got going offensively, with the two sides shooting a combined 17.9 percent from the field and missing all 12 3-point tries. ISU was able to gain an advantage at the charity stripe, going 4-of-6 at the free throw line while CSP didn't get to the line in the first quarter, as ISU held a 12-6 lead.
The quarter break did not help improve things, as the first six shots between the two teams was missed. Buckley made a 3-pointer which expanded the Cyclone lead to 15-6, which helped open the lid on ISU's 3-point shooting for the afternoon. After going 0-of-5 from deep in the first, the Cyclones bounced back by going 7-of-11 from behind the arc in the second quarter. The Cyclones opened up a lead as big as 24 points, and took a 39-20 advantage into the locker room.
The Golden Bears kept it competitive in the third quarter, only being out-scored by one point while shooting 47.1 percent from the field. However, the Cyclones were superior on the glass, recording seven offensive boards in the third to help keep a sizable advantage. CSP's shooting cooled off as the second half went along, allowing ISU to build its lead to as many as 29 points.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to…
Seanna Johnson. The junior's versatility was on full display Sunday afternoon for the fans at Hilton Coliseum to see. An example of her versatility came in the third quarter, when Johnson blocked a 3-point attempt by CSP's Lauren Shifflett, and then ran the court to receive a feed from Bridget Carleton for a lay-in while drawing a foul to make it a 3-point play. Johnson finished the game with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
