CONWAY, S.C. – The Iowa State softball team held an early advantage against Coastal Carolina before the Chanticleers put up 12 unanswered runs en route to a 13-3 win in six innings Friday night at the CCU Softball Stadium. The loss was ISU's first of the year to move to 5-1. Coastal Carolina is now 3-3.
Brittany Gomez, Aly Cappaert and Jorden Spendlove all had multi-hit games while Maddie Reese hit a two-run home run for her third homer of the season.
Maddie Reese Goes Yard Again
After an RBI-single by Amanda Daneker gave the Chanticleers a 1-0 advantage after the first inning, the Cyclones got back to work in the second. Lexi Slater led off with a single to center to set the stage for Maddie Reese, who launched a 1-2 pitch over the wall in leftfield for her team-high third home run of the season to make it 2-1 Cyclones.
ISU worked hard to bring more across. Jorden Spendlove got her first extra-base hit of the season with a double to center and advanced to third during the next at-bat. Two batters later, Brittany Gomez used her speed to leg out an infield single while Spendlove came across to make it 3-1 Cyclones.
Coastal Cashes In
Iowa State left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning and CCU made the Cyclones pay. Chanticleers pitcher Kiana Quolas took a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right field to reduce the ISU lead to 3-2. After a CCU walk, Iowa State brought in Stacy Roggentien to pitch for Katie Johnson against Coastal's most dangerous hitter, Kory Hayden. Roggentien was able to induce a groundball, but it went through the legs of Lexi Slater to get Hayden on base. The Chanticleers made ISU pay as Amanda Daneker got her second and third RBIs of the game with a two-RBI double to make it 4-3 CCU. The Chants would add another run later in the inning on a Roggentien wild pitch.
It was more of the same from CCU in the fifth as they racked up another five run inning, two of the runs coming on an RBI-single by Kailey Mellen to expand the Chants lead to 10-3.
CCU closed it out in the bottom of the sixth as Kory Hayden hit her 50th career home run over the right field wall to enforce the run rule at 13-3.
