AMES, Iowa – One of the deepest and most talented 5,000-meter fields in the country was on display Friday night on the Harry Hoak Track in the Lied Athletic and Recreational Center during day one of the 24th-annual Iowa State Classic. Five of the nation's top-10 times were clocked in the men's event, including a 13:38.56 performance from Virginia Tech's Thomas Curtin, currently No. 2 in NCAA Division I.
Curtin out-paced Reed Connor (Unattached, 13:39.75), who set the current meet and track records during the 2014 Classic, which stands at 13:37.42. Florida's Mark Parrish crossed the finish line in a time of 13:41.87, the fifth-fastest time on the 2015 indoor season.
On the women's side, Notre Dame's Molly Seidel and Iowa State's Margaret Connelly led the pack with times of 15:54.45 and 16:08.99, the 8th and 10th-fastest times in the country, respectively, on the season. Connelly's personal best time moves her into fourth-place on Iowa State's indoor all-time top-performers list.
With a mark of 20' 4.25" (6.20m) in the long jump, Jhoanmy Luque is now ranked 14th in the nation and claimed sole possession of fifth-place on Iowa State's all-time top-performers list.
Marine Vallet cleared a height of 5' 11.25" (1.81m) in the high jump, moving her into 16th nationally and keeping her in third-place on Iowa State's indoor all-time top-performers list. The mark is a new indoor personal record for the France native.
Taylor Sanderson and Kaci Storm grabbed a pair of personal records in the 60-meter hurdle event. Storm cruised to a third-place, 8.87-second performance in the preliminary heat of the women's event, while Sanderson took seventh in a time of 8.20 on the men's side.
A pair of personal records fell for Iowa State, as Henry Kelley and Ben Krynski tossed marks of 62' 1.25" (18.93m) and 50' 11.00" (15.52m), respectively. After his seventh-place performance, Kelley remains in fourth-place on Iowa State's indoor all-time top-performers list.
