MINNEAPOLIS- The Iowa State tennis team is preparing for a full weekend of action as they head to Minneapolis to take on Minnesota and Marquette on Friday and Saturday. The team will return to Ames on Sunday to take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee at home.
Last Sunday, the Cyclones fell to then No. 33 Oklahoma, 4-2, in Ames. With three opportunities to bounce back, Iowa State hopes to improve on their 2-2 record, but challenges remain while players try to stay healthy.
“We have six players right now that are healthy and ready to play,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “That's a very big challenge with three matches coming up. That wasn't designed to go that way, but it is what it is.”
The Cyclones have long been prioritizing doubles play as a strategy to take the early lead over difficult teams. ISU has struggled to win the doubles point with roster changes early this season, forcing the team to try to win four singles matches before the opponent can clinch the win.
“If we can get into a good start in doubles, it's going to release the pressure from the people at the bottom,” Espinosa said. “We'll try to play to clinch, so three matches within that short period. I want to keep the kids somewhat healthy and ready to go, but expecting to play the distance if we are playing well. We need to emphasize doubles, we may need to make some changes in the doubles pairings and maybe even a little bit of a change at No. 5 and No. 6 to see how that plays out, but I do think that we have a very good chance to beat those three teams if we play like we did against Oklahoma.”
Minnesota, currently 6-4, last took on South Dakota State at home, earning a 7-0 win. They will square off against the Cyclones on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center.
“We're just trying to get rhythm back and try to take it easy because we have three matches coming up,” Espinosa said.
Saturday, the Cyclones will play Marquette in Minneapolis at before coming back to Ames to take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee at home.
“We will have some adjustment when we come back,” Espinosa said. “But hopefully, with two matches under our belt we'll just come back and warm up a little bit, and we know what our courts look like and feel like so we should be good.”
