FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Edward Kemboi proved why he entered the 800-meter run as the number one-seed, Friday at day-one of the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Â The senior cruised to a first place finish in the preliminary round of the race and earned a spot in tomorrow's finals at 7:30 p.m.
The Eldoret, Kenya native kept a solid pace for the first two laps before he made his move. Kemboi passed Alabama's Alex Amankwah in the beginning of the third lap and never looked back. It was all Kemboi for the remainder of the race, with the senior breaking the tape in 1:48.04.
The Iowa State men's distance-medley relay team ended the season on a strong note taking third-place. A squad comprised of Edward Kemboi, Brandon Barnes, Patrick Peterson and Christian DeLago crossed the line in 9:32.48, the second-best time in school history. The top-two times in school history in the men's distance-medley relay were run during the 2014-15 season.
Kemboi gave the Cyclones a big lead in the first leg of the race, followed by an impressive run by Brandon Barnes. Patrick Peterson kept the Cyclones near the front of the pack allowing Christian DeLago a chance to finish strong. The sophomore didn't disappoint, staying in the hunt for first-place until his final stride.
The Cyclones return to action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. with Cameron Ostrowski competing in the high jump. The senior enters as the 14th seed with a mark of 7-03.00. Â Edward Kemboi is set for the finals in the 800-meter run at 8 p.m. Katy Moen will represent the Cyclone women at 8 p.m. in the 3,000-meter run as the 15th-seed.
