TULSA, Okla. – The Iowa State men's golf team finished fourth at the Big 12 Championship at 1171. The Cyclones began the final round in fourth place and remained there with another outstanding 18 holes, barely holding off No. 20 Oklahoma State with a 291 to wrap up its second-straight upper-half finish at the conference tournament.
Iowa State, ranked 42nd nationally, used scores of 71 (Ruben Sondjaja), 73 (Scott Fernandez), 73 (Nick Voke), 74 (Sam Daley) and 75 (Collin Foster) this afternoon. The fourth-place finish ties for ISU's second-best showing in Big 12 Championship history (1997-3rd; 2014-4th), as the Cyclones defeated three teams ranked in the nation's top-20: No. 10 Oklahoma, No. 17 Baylor and No. 20 Oklahoma State.
Fernandez and Voke led the Cyclones by tying for 10th at 290 to earn All-Tournament honors. Fernandez showed why he is an All-American with an incredible finish down the stretch. After firing a 6-over 41 on the front nine, Fernandez rallied with a 3-under 32 on the back side, including birdies on holes 15, 17 and 18.
Fernandez' clutch performance was needed. After OSU's Jordan Niebrugge buried a 40-foot birdie putt on 18, the Cowboys were now tied with ISU. But Fernandez countered by rolling in a 15-foot birdie on the final hole to push ISU one shot ahead.
His finish allowed Fernandez to earn Big 12 All-Tournament honors (top-10) for the second time in his career (2013, 2015). Fernandez and Voke (2014, 2015) are the only two Cyclones in school history to finish in the top-10 at the Big 12 Championship multiple times.
It was Fernandez' school-record 29th career top-10 finish and eighth of the season, tying the single-season mark he set in 2012-13. Voke now has four top-10s this year and eight in his career.
Daley ended the tournament in 15th place at 292 and Sondjaja tied for 30th at 299. Sondjaja's final-round 71 was the lowest of the day by a Cyclone.
Texas won the tournament by 24 shots over second-place Texas Tech at 1130. UT's Scottie Scheffler was the medalist at 280.
Iowa State is a lock to make its third NCAA Regional appearance in the last four years. The NCAA selection show is on Monday.
