Cyclones Doubles See Success on Day One

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn – The Iowa State tennis team kicked off its fall season Friday at the Gopher Invitational.
Head coach Armando Espinosa went into the weekend with a focus on doubles matches and the focus paid off with all five of the Cyclone pairs winning their first round matches. The team finished 7-3 in doubles play.
Two pairings highlighted the day by finishing undefeated.
The first was the pairing of freshman Liza Buss and senior Ana Gasparovic. The duo down their first pairing from South Dakota State, 6-3. They followed that up with a close battle against a pairing from Minnesota beating them 7-6.
Freshman Regina Espindola and senior Alejandra Galvis made up the other pairing that started their season off 2-0. Their day started by beating a pairing from Northern Iowa 6-3 and finishing by beating a pairing from North Dakota 6-3, as well.
In singles play, newcomer Annabelle Bonadonna went undefeated for the day. Bonadonna defeated both of her opponents 6-1 and 6-0. Redshirt freshman Liera Bender also went undefeated on day one.
Play will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. with completely new doubles draws.
