AMES, Iowa - Tanner Weatherman was named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. This is the third time Weatherman has earned the honor in his career.
The senior helped lead Iowa State to a team title at the Virginia Duals over the weekend. His four wins, three of which came by bonus-points, earned him the honor of Outstanding Wrestler at the prestigious event. In four matches, Weatherman was a point-scoring machine. He tallied 16 total takedowns for the tournament, with only two of his matches going a full seven minutes.
In the first matchup of the Virginia Duals, Weatherman defeated Patrick Davis of George Mason. Before Davis was disqualified for stalling, Weatherman held a 16-2 advantage over the Patriot.
In his next match, Weatherman would also score bonus-points for the Cyclones. He rode hard in the top position to beat Tyler Buckwalter of Kent State by 14-3 major-decision with 3:50 in riding-time.
The 165-pound semifinals matchup featured Weatherman and Chattanooga's Dominic Lampe. The Huxley, Iowa native locked up a cradle in the third period to pin Lampe in 6:36, nabbing six team points for the Cyclones.
Weatherman scored three more crucial points that would prove to the difference for the Cyclones in their 16-14 upset victory over No. 5 Virginia Tech. He knocked off No. 11 David McFadden by 4-1 decision behind 1:24 of riding-time.
