STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania – The Iowa State track and field team began their 2016 indoor campaign at the Penn State Relays on Saturday. A dozen representatives of the ISU men's program competed on the day, split up across relay and individual events.
Thought not an event the Cyclones frequently partake in during the indoor season, Iowa State put up a nice performance in the 4x800-meter relay with the team of Nathan Rodriguez, Jacob Aune, Christian DeLago and Brandon Wheat finishing second in 7:29.33. The quartet's time makes them the second-fastest 4x8 team in ISU program history.
The Cyclones got a pair of promising performances in the men's 3,000-meter run. Running unattached, true freshman Thomas Pollard just missed out on the win, taking second in 8:26.16. As for the Iowa State representative, Josef Andrews had a solid outing with a fourth place finish in 8:31.69.
Iowa State's distance medley relay teams took second and third place, as the Cyclones began the process of building a new DMR team to replace last season's First-Team All-America squad. The quartet of Christian DeLago, Deon Sanders, Brandon Wheat and Toby Hardwick took second in 9:57.21. The relay team of Brian Llamas, Aune, Rodriguez and Dan Curts finished sixth in 10:30.66.
The day started off with Llamas earning a third-place finish in the men's mile, clocking in at 4:09.45. Iowa Central transfer Sanders took 10th in the 500-meter run, clocking a time of 1:05.64.
