FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Iowa State tennis team went unbeaten in doubles action and finished 7-2 overall Friday afternoon at the Jon Messick Invitational hosted by Colorado State University.
The Cyclones opened action with a perfect record in doubles play, sweeping three matches against the host Rams. The top doubles team of Maty Cancini and Annabella Bonadonna rallied from a 5-4 deficit to defeat CSU's Riley Reeves and Alyssa Grijalva, 6-5 (2). Regina Espindola and Claudia Toledo teamed up to win 6-2 over Madison Porter and Solene Crawley, while Erin Freeman and Liera Bender beat Sandra Keta and Emily Kolbow by a 6-2 score as well.
In singles action, ISU went 4-2 playing against foes from Wyoming. The Cyclones swept the top three singles matches against the Cowgirls.
Cancini played the top singles spot and earned a 6-4, 6-3 win against the Cowgirls' Dorottya Jones. At No. 2 singles, Regina Espindola continued her strong fall with a hard-fought three-set win against Tessa Van der Ploeg, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Annabella Bonadonna defeated Elisa Koonik, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
Transfer Erin Freeman was a 6-4, 7-6 winner against Imogen Clews at No. 5 singles.
The Cyclones return to action Saturday facing Northern Colorado in doubles at noon (central) and Colorado State in singles at 1:30 p.m.
