FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Iowa State freshman Maty Cancini was named champion of the Jon Messick Invitational as the Cyclones finished up play Sunday afternoon at the tournament, hosted by Colorado State. Cyclone sophomore Regina Espindola was recognized as a runner-up.
Cancini earned the title with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 win against Northern Colorado's Beth Coton. Cancini was unbeaten in singles play and finished 2-1 in doubles action. Espindola beat UNC's Marissa Baca and Erin Freeman defeated the Bears' Ella Mora as both Cyclones finished the weekend 3-0 in singles action as well.
Annabella Bonadonna got back on track in singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Courtney Schulte, while Claudia Toledo also improved to 2-1 this weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Lily-Ana Kreutzer.
The Cyclones lost all three doubles matches to Wyoming before finishing strong in singles action.
The Cyclones conclude the fall season next weekend at the SIUE Indoor Invite in Edwardsville, Illinois. The tournament will be played Friday and Saturday.
