AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson's prediction about his USA Cadet World Team was proven true at the World Championships. Jackson had predicted that this team would outperform the 2015 squad, who finished third in the world. The United States posted a second-place finish at the World Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia, which is tied for the highest finish ever by a USA Cadet World Team.
In total, the United States won three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
It was a two-dog race between the United States and the Russian squad. The Russians narrowly edged the USA, tallying 69-team points, while the Red, White and Blue fell two-team points shy at 67. Azerbaijan and host-nation Georgia finished tied for a distant third, totaling 47-team points.
The team-finish was not the only USA Wrestling milestone eclipsed by the cadet team. Two of the three individuals who brought home gold medals are adding to a collection they already have. Both of those wrestlers became the first USA Cadet World Team members to win multiple Cadet World gold medals.
Coach Jackson has returned to Ames and is prepping with the Iowa State wrestling team, as they get set to open their season on Nov. 4, at South Dakota State.
