AMES, Iowa – Iowa State assistant coaches and former Cyclone wrestlers Travis and Trent Paulson will be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) Wrestling Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2017. The Paulson twins are two of eights inductees announced Thursday by the IHSAA.
The duo hails from Council Bluffs, Iowa, where they both enjoyed illustrious prep careers at Lewis Central High School. Travis was a three-time Iowa high school state champion (1999, 2001, 2002), compiling a prep record of 174-3, including an 87-0 mark his final two seasons. He came to Iowa State as an Amateur Wrestling News All-American and the sixth-ranked wrestler at 152 pounds.
Trent's high school exploits were equally grand, as he won a pair of Iowa high school state titles, to go with three Junior National Greco-Roman championships. Trent tallied an astonishing 192-2 prep record, going 102-0 during his junior and senior campaigns. When he came to Iowa State in 2002, Trent arrived as an AWN All-American and the No. 3 ranked prep wrestler at 145 pounds.
The duo lived up to their billing during their Cyclone careers. Each brother tallied three All-America honors and over 100 victories during their time wearing the Cardinal & Gold. Both tallied the best NCAA finishes of their career as seniors, as Travis finished fifth at 165 pounds while Trent took home the 157-pound national title in 2007.
Travis joined head coach Kevin Jackson's staff in 2011, and his teaching has been paying off for the Cyclones on the mat ever since. One of his most notable achievements was being part of one of the greatest single-season turnarounds in Iowa State wrestling history. After going 4-17 as a redshirt freshman in 2011-12, Michael Moreno finished sixth at the 2013 NCAA Championships while compiling a 31-10 record that season under Travis's guidance.
Trent's addition to the staff in 2014 not only reunited the twins as ISU assistant coaches, but has also been integral in the recent success of the Cyclone middle-weight classes. He's helped mentor Moreno, Lelund Weatherspoon and Tanner Weatherman, among others, deep into the NCAA Tournament.
