AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's track and field ended a two-year absence in the indoor top-25 Tuesday, when the Cyclones landed at No. 24 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Championship Rankings.
Leading Iowa State's ascent up the national rankings has been
Christina Hillman. The redshirt senior collected her third career Big 12 shot put title over the weekend with a season-best toss of 58-10. Hillman currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA this season with the NCAA Indoor Championships 11 days away.
Another key to ISU's rise has been the performance of
Jhoanmy Luque. The sophomore Venezuelan recorded her best career long jump on Friday, earning the bronze medal with her best jump of 20-10 3/4, moving her to 15th in the NCAA rankings. Her teammate
Kate Hall is currently ranked fifth in the nation with her bestg jump of 21-5 1/2 from earlier in the season. Hall is also ranked in the 60m dash.
Other Cyclones contributing to ISU's ranking score include
Jasmine Staebler in the 800-meter run (2:06.14 at Iowa State Classic) and
Perez Rotich in the 5,000-meter run (16:11.37 at BU Season Opener).
The USTFCCCA National Championship Rankings are complied by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race.
