Session Three
Unseeded Lelund Weatherspoon is heading to the 174-pound semifinals after securing another upset victory. This time Ohio's Cody Walters was the victim. Walters jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period of action. Weatherspoon began the second period on top. He turned the Bobcat for four, and then rode him out, holding a 4-2 advantage into the third period.
Weatherspoon earned an escape in the third to bring his lead to 5-2. Walters secured a riding time point, but was unable to bring the ISU grappler to the mat for the needed takedown.
No. 8 Earl Hall dropped a 5-0 decision against No. 1 Nashon Garrett of Cornell. The Homestead, Fla., never was really able to get his offense going in this match and Garrett won the match without surrendering a point.
The 165-pound quarterfinals featured a rematch from this year's Big 12 Championship. No. 9 Tanner Weatherman was pitted against No. 1 Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State. Dieringer jumped out to a quick lead on Weatherman and remained in control for the remainder of the match. It was the Cowboy with an 11-5 decision over Weatherman.
Unseeded Patrick Downey's streak of upsets came to a close in the quarterfinals. He faced Minnesota's No. 3 Brett Pfarr with a shot in the semifinals on the line. With a 12-3 major-decision, Pfarr topped Downey.
