NEW YORK CITY, N.y. – Three Iowa State grapplers have earned All America honors at the 2016 NCAA Championship. Senior Earl Hall, junior Lelund Weatherspoon and sophomore Patrick Downey will each finish on the podium in Madison Square Garden.
As a team, No. 17 Iowa State (10-6, 2-2 Big 12) has compiled 29.5 team points through four sessions. The Cyclones are currently in 13th place in the team race, which is led by Penn State who has 114 team points.
The Cardinal and Gold will return to the mat tomorrow for the medal round of the NCAA Championship. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. CT and can be seen on ESPNU and ESPN3. Follow @CycloneWR on Twitter for live updates from New York City.
Session Four
In the 174-pound semifinals, Lelund Weatherspoon scrapped it out for a spot in the finals with Ohio State's No. 11 Myles Martin. Weatherspoon wrestled a competitive match, however, the Buckeye was able to end the Big 12 Champion's run to a title. It was Martins 8-2 over Weatherspoon.
The session began with No. 8 Earl Hall earning his second career All-America honor. He reeled off three takedowns, three escapes and a four-point near-fall to defeat Pitt's No. 11 Dom Forys by 13-7 decision. Hall is now the 84th Iowa State wrestler to earn All America honors in two or more seasons.
Hall then faced the No. 5 seed, Jordan Conaway, of Penn State. The Nittany Lion came out on top in this matchup. He defeated Hall by 7-2 decision, sending the Homestead, Fla., native to the seventh-place match tomorrow morning.
Patrick Downey earned his spot on the podium with a 5-3 decision over Northern Illinois' Shawn Scott. Downey earned a takedown, reversal and was awarded one point after Scott was called for Stalling.
The unseeded sophomore followed up is round of 12 victory with a 3-2 decision over Princeton's No. 7 Brett Harner. Downey and Harner were locked 1-1, but with 25 seconds to go in the third, Downey was able to drag the Tiger to the mat for the winning takedown.
No. 9 Tanner Weatherman's career as a Cyclone came to an unfortunate close on Friday evening. The four-year starter from Huxley, Iowa, suffered a 5-2 loss in the round of 12 to Virginia Tech's No. 14 David McFadden. Weatherman finished his career at Iowa State as a four-time NCAA qualifier and posted a career mark of 98-45.
