IOWA CITY, Iowa – Kyven Gadson marched to the 97 kg semifinals at the 2016 Olympic Team Trials. The 2015 National Champion fell short of the finals, suffering a loss to 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist, and former Cyclone, Jake Varner. It was Varner advancing with a 4-0 decision.
To go along with Gadson, Angel Escobedo (57 kg) and Deron Winn (86 kg) also represented the Cyclone Wrestling Club at the 2016 Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City.
En route to the semifinals, Gadson knocked of Kallen Kleinschmidt in a gritty 3-2 match. In his next match, he dominated Scott Schiller, scoring on a pair of four-point moves. It was Gadson with a 13-2 win by technical-fall.
After falling to Varner 4-0, Gadson was sent to the backside to wrestle Micah Burak. In 55 seconds, Burak pinned Gadson.
Escobedo began the day with a tough 12-9 loss to 2016 NCAA Champion, Nahshon Garrett. He was then forced to injury default out of the remainder of the tournament.
It was Ed Ruth with a 10-0 technical-fall win over Winn in the first round, but Winn bounced back. On the backside, he defeated Austin Trotman by 12-6 decsion. In the ensuing match, Winn was eliminated from the tournament, falling 8-4 to Richard Perry.
