04.15.2016 | Track and Field
DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State began the Jim Duncan Invitational by earning three event wins Friday evening at Drake Stadium. Meanwhile at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa Pacific, Dan Curts recorded a big personal best for the Cyclones.
Leading the way for the Cyclone women was a 1-2-3 finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Freshman Kelly Naumann took the win for the Cyclones, crossing the line in 10:57.51. Naumann's effort makes her the sixth sub-11 minute women's steeplechaser in Cyclone history. Following behind her was Andrea Toppin in 11:11.86, and fellow freshman Grace Gibbons in third in 11:18.26.
On the men's side, Iowa State picked up a pair of wins in the field. Opening the meet for the Cyclones was Jalen Ford in the men's high jump, and he did it with a strong performance. Ford took the win with a season-high best leap of 6-8 3/4. In the shot put ring, Nace Plesko also got a win for the Cyclones. The Slovenian was the dominant performer, with all five of his legal throws being further than any other thrower in the competition. His winning throw checked in at 57-4 1/4.
At the Bryan Clay, Dan Curts was the lone Cyclone competitor, and he was outstanding en route to recording a 3:45.90 in second three of the men's 1,500-meter run. It was the first time in Curts' competitive career that he has gone below 3:50 in the 1,500.
