04.23.2016 | Track and Field
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – Iowa State's track and field program finished Saturday with six event wins across the four meets the Cyclones competed in. ISU was in action at the LSU Alumni Gold, the Musco Twilight in Iowa City, the Virginia Challenge and the John McDonnell Invitational hosted by Arkansas.
The highlight of the day was a pair of outstanding performances by Jhoanmy Luque at LSU. The Cyclones were able to see some great efforts at all four meets during the weekend.
LSU Alumni Gold
Iowa State earned a pair of event wins on the day at Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Jhoanmy Luque had the most active day among the Cyclone contingent. In the women's long jump competition, Luque rose to the occasion and earned the win on her final jump, leaping a wind-aided 20-11 1/4 for the victory. Following in the invitational triple jump, the Venezuelan saw her fifth jump become the best of her career, as she hop, skipped and jumped 42-11 3/4 to temporarily take the lead. Though she ended up finishing fourth, Luque's mark puts her second in the Big 12 and tied for seventh in Division I in the event.
The Cyclones other win at LSU came via Jan Jeuschede in the men's shot put competition. The German senior was the man to beat from the start, as he took the lead on his first toss and did not look back. Jeuschede's three legal throws on the afternoon were all further than any other throws in the competition, with his best being a 59-7 1/2 on his second effort.
Musco Twilight
ISU left the Fracis X. Cretzmeyer Track with a quartet of victories on Saturday. The highlight came in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, with true freshman Grace Gibbons winning the event via a massive improvement. The former Gilbert standout clocked in at 10:55.62, 23 seconds faster compared to what she ran last weekend at the Jim Duncan Invitational. The performance moves her to fifth all-time in Iowa State history in the event, and marks her as the seventh sub-11 minute steeplechaser.
Two of the Cyclones other victories came in the 400-meter hurdles. Once again, Derek Jones was outstanding as he recorded a season-best mark of 51.42. Jones now ranks 28th in the nation in the quarter-mile hurdles. On the women's side, Alyssa Gonzalez was victorious with a best mark of 1:00.54. In the men's javelin, Trey Achterhoff got the victory via a personal best toss of 198-4, moving him up to eighth in ISU history in the event.
Virginia Challenge
Iowa State was able to record some strong performances on the day. Evelyne Guay got her best time in the 1,500 by crossing the line in 4:24.70. In the women's 5,000, Perez Rotich recorded her outdoor personal best with a 16:18.87 to lead the Cyclone contingent with a 10th-place finish.
John McDonnell Invitational
In Iowa State's only run at the meet hosted by Arkansas, it was Nathan Rodriguez competing in the 1,500-meter run. The redshirt freshman ran in section two and finished sixth among his field in 3:47.75.
