DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State only had four competitors on Saturday at the Drake Relays, but there were still plenty of good performances and strong finishes at Drake Stadium. A couple of Cyclones earned top-five finishes, while a freshman showed some big potential in the women's steeplechase.
Christina Hillman got up to second right off the bat on her first throw in the women's shot put, getting her best throw of 52-9 1/2. While the rains that persisted throughout the day got lighter, the big throws eluded the Cyclone senior, who was only able to get above 52 feet one more time during her series of throws. However, only one thrower was able to improve her standings in the final three rounds of throws, allowing Hillman to stay second on the day.
Kelly Naumann settled herself in the middle of the pack for the first half of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, but was among the best navigators of the water jump, allowing her to move up the leaderboard. The freshman fought her way up to fourth with 1,000 to go, but was passed on the final lap to get to her seventh-place, 10:36.34 finish.
The time was a 21-second improvement off her time at the Jim Duncan Invite a fortnight ago at Drake Stadium. Naumann moves into third in program history in the steeplechase, the top-eight on Iowa State's all-time top-10 have come in the last five years.
Derek Jones was strong in the 400-meter hurdles, taking fifth place in 51.98. Jones just missed out on third, as third, fourth and fifth were separated by only a few-thousandths of a second.
The Iowa State fans braving the elements were treated to seeing a Cyclone legend in action, as Edward Kemboi competed in the men's special 800-meter run. Up against a strong field, Kemboi was able to battle back in the last 200 to earn a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:48.81.
