AMES, Iowa - Iowa State track and field's Christina Hillman was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the Association announced Wednesday. Hillman, who was one of 58 recipients for the highly-competitive scholarship, will received a one-time scholarship from the NCAA of $7,500 that can be used towarded an accredited graduate program.
Honorees are evaluated on a variety of basis, not just athletics and academics. The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee also looks at applicants' campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and leadership. The program seeks college student-athletes who show the dedication and effort are needed to succeed in postgraduate studies.
Hillman, a Dover, Delaware native, had an incredible run in Ames both in and out of competition. She was a a seven-time First Team All-American, one of four seven-time First Team All-Americans in ISU women's program history. The Dover, Delaware native is a two-time NCAA Champion in the shot put, sweeping the indoor and outdoor titles in 2014. She is also a three-time Big 12 champion in the shot put. Hillman is Iowa State's school record holder in the shot put both indoors (59-6 3/4) and outdoors (58-2), and ranks third in ISU history in the discus (171-1). Earlier this month at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Hillman took ninth place in the shot put.
In the classroom, Hillman graduated in May with a 4.0 GPA in Child, Adult and Family Services and was named the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year for Division I Women's Track and Field/Cross Country. A two-time First Team Academic All-America, she was also a two-time CoSIDA Acaemic All-District honoree, and a four-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 recipient.
