RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil – Former Iowa State steeplechase All-American Hillary Bor won his heat of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase Monday morning during the 2016 Olympic Games. Bor's win means he has earned a spot in the final of the men's steeplechase, which will take place Wednesday at 9:50 a.m. Central Time.
On paper, the race was going to be a challenge for Bor, who was middle of the pack both in terms of season and career-best times with his 8:24.10 he ran at the U.S. Olympic Trials last month. However, he took the initiative early on to ensure that he was among the lead pack on the warm day.
Also to the benefit of Bor was the pedestrian pace, in spite of the star-power and times brought to the table on paper, the race settled into an 8:25 pace that was plenty appropriate for Bor. The race wore on and Bor found himself among a lead group of four heading into the bell lap, with the top three guaranteed advancement to the final.
A sergeant in the U.S. Army, Bor made a move with 250 meters to go to ensure that he was at the front of the race when he reached the final water jump. About halfway down the front-stretch, the lead group of three was secured, and Bor was able to ease up knowing his job was done and his spot in the final was confirmed. Bor's official time was 8:25.01, edging out two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and three-time world champion Ezekiel Kemboi of Kenya in the process.
