IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State throwers got the 2017 track and field season underway with some strong performances at the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday. Newcomer Ariana Kuhn got the first victory of the Cyclone season in the women's weight throw, with a personal best toss of 63-3 1/4.
Kuhn, a senior in her first season at ISU after transferring from Western Kentucky, was one of the contenders from the get-go, getting then personal-bests on her second (58-1) and third (58-6 1/2) throws to put herself in second halfway through the competition. She edged ahead of UNI's Sarah Pate with another personal best toss of 60-5 1/4 on her fourth throw. On the fifth throw, she left the competition behind, unloading her new PR of 63-3 1/4, a Hawkeye Invitational meet record, on her way to the victory.
The winning throw by Kuhn, along with being a personal best by nearly six feet, moves her into fourth on Iowa State's all-time performers list in the weight throw.
She wasn't the only Cyclone women's newcomer who made a strong first impression, as junior Christabel Okeke finished fourth with a throw of 56-5 3/4. Okeke, who came to Ames after two seasons at Coffeyville CC, got to the finals with a throw of 55-7, but got in a slump after three-straight fouls. Her fifth throw was also her best, as she unloaded her 56-5 3/4 to protect her fourth place finish.
In the men's weight throw, Brett Peters marked his ISU debut with an eighth-place toss of 51-11. Sophomore Vlad Pavlenko showed vast improvement over his freshman year as his ninth-place toss of 51-11 was nearly 10 feet further than his best from his freshman campaign.
