COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Iowa State's first day at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships were highlighted by a finalist on the track, and an All-American in the field. Jasmine Staebler advanced to the final of the 800-meter run, while Jhoanmy Luque's
Staebler's heat of the 800-meter run was a slow, tactical one, with the field bunched together throughout much of the race. The first two-and-a-half laps saw the sophomore keep herself in the top three, but heading into the final lap the chaos started happening ad Staebler was down in fifth. She kept her cool, and was able to make a move on the outside to find some clear track and get back into third place to earn an automatic qualifying slot into the final.
Jhoanmy Luque opened up her NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a 12th place finish in the long jump competition. Luque was the first jumper in each of the first three rounds. Her first jump was a foul, and then she was able to get on the board in the second round with a leap of 20-2 1/2. She was in 11th place heading into the third round, needing an improvement to work her way into the top-nine. She did improve, moving up 20-3, but it was not enough to get three more jumps, as she settled for her 12th-place finish.
Luque is now a five-time All-American during her Iowa State career. She is now a two-time indoor long jump All-American, adding to her second team honors that she received for her 15th-place finish at last season's NCAA Indoor Championships.
