COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Iowa State closed out the indoor track and field season and day two of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. The evening was highlighted by Jasmine Staebler earning First Team All-America honors with her sixth place finish in the 800-meter run. Also on the women's side, Jhoanmy Luque earned her second Second Team All-America honor in as many days with a ninth-place effort in the triple jump.
Staebler's sixth-place finish earned the Iowa State three team points, allowing them to finish tied for 47th in the team standings.
The pace was always going to be too much for Staebler, with the current and previous NCAA record holder in the event in the field. The Cyclone sophomore ran her own race, staying near the back and in seventh at the bell, she was able to pick off Stanford's Olivia Baker down the front stretch to take sixth in 2:04.08. Staebler earned First Team All-America honors, her first career All-America, and the 11th time ISU has earned All-America honors in the women's 800.
A challenging Friday in the long jump pit was put in the rearview mirror by Luque on Saturday in the triple jump. She got on the board on her first leap at 42-4 1/4, and made a nice move up the board on her second leap at 43-3 3/4 to put her in fifth. However, a third-jump foul gave her some nervous moments as she waited to make sure she stayed in the final, which she did in seventh.
Her final round started out slow, with a foul and a non-improving 43-1 1/2, but the competition stayed behind her as she was in seventh heading into the final round. She hit her best leap to finish at 43-4 1/4, but improvement by the competition behind her saw her drop to ninth and just miss out on First Team All-America honors.
Luque's ninth place finish does give her another Second Team All-America honor, her second of the weekend and sixth total All-America honor of her career. She is the first Cyclone woman to earn All-America honors in the women's triple jump.
Unfortunately for Iowa State's men's 4x400-meter relay team, the season ended on a sour note, as the Cyclones had to take a DNF. It was still a historic season for the quartet of Eric Fogltanz, Ben Kelly, Roshon Roomes and Jaymes Dennison, who broke the Iowa State school record in the event at 3:05.61 and finished fourth in the Big 12 in the event.
