NORMAN, Okla. – Iowa State (15-22, 0-6 Big 12) dropped its series finale to No. 12 Oklahoma (31-7, 3-0 Big 12) on Saturday at Marita Hynes by a score of 13-4. The Cyclones led briefly on a heads-up base running play in the top of the second, but were unable to keep pace with the explosive OU offense.
Oklahoma 13, Iowa State 4
Iowa State took its first lead of the series in the early going after Oklahoma got on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single by Shay Knighten. Cathlin Bingham got the Cyclone offense jump-started with a single up the middle before Nychole Antillon drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
The Oklahoma defense then put on a dramatic shift, moving the Sooner left fielder into the infield. Seeing an opportunity, Iowa State called for a double steal, and it worked to perfection. Both Bingham and Antillon picked up stolen bases and then came in to score on a throwing error by the OU catcher. The ball sailed into left field and with no defender in left to hold the runners, both scored easily, giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead.
The Sooners responded in a big way in the home half of the second, putting nine runs on the board. OU picked up five hits, including a three-run home run from Sydney Romero. Following the dinger from Romero, Emma Hylen would enter in relief for starter Savannah Sanders. Hylen pitched the next 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits. Junior Brianna Weilbacher closed the game out in the circle.
Freshman Sami Williams picked up her Big 12-leading 13th double of the season in the top of the third, and notched a two-RBI single to center in the top of the fifth, scoring Niki Turner and Kelsey McFarland. Williams' shot kept the Cyclones alive, extending the game to the sixth inning, where OU would close the door with a three-run home run by Nicole Pendley.
