LINCOLN, Neb. – Iowa State (15-24, 0-6 Big 12) dropped a pair of games at Nebraska (14-20, 3-3 Big Ten) on Wednesday. The Huskers won game one 5-3 and game two 2-1 in a tightly contested day.
Iowa State out-hit the Nebraska 13-8 on the day, but the Huskers tallied three home runs that proved to be the difference.
Nebraska 5, Iowa State 3
The Cyclones mounted offensive threats early in game one, but were unable to capitalize against Nebraska starter Kaylan Jablonski. Iowa State loaded the bases in the top of the second on a Husker fielding error, a fielder's choice and a walk, but left all three stranded. Cathlin Bingham and Sami Williams then got the third frame started with back-to-back base hits, and advanced on another Husker error, but ISU once again came away empty.
Nebraska got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double to right center by Taylor Otte. The junior was then brought in to score on the ensuing at-bat on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Barrow. The Huskers extended the lead with three additional runs in the home half of the third. The inning was started on a run scored via illegal pitch and punctuated on a two-run home run by Kaylan Jablonski, putting Iowa State in a 5-0 hole.
The Cyclones broke through on offense in the top of the seventh inning. With runners on second and third, Bingham brought the first ISU run of the game to the plate with an RBI single, scoring Caudle from third. Freshman Talyn Lewis then smacked a two-RBI double to right center, bringing home Bingham and Kelsey McFarland. However, the Cyclone rally would end there, as the Iowa State fell 5-3.
Nebraska 2, Iowa State 1
Game two of Wednesday's double header was a defensive battle in the early going. Two scoreless frames were played with a light rain coming down at Bowlin Stadium before Nebraska put the first run of the game on the board. Husker center fielder Alyvia Simmons notched her first home run of the season on a solo shot, giving Nebraska a 1-0 lead.
Cassie McClure, Nebraska's starting pitcher, followed suit in the ensuing frame with a solo home run of her own to right center. The shot put Iowa State in a 2-0 hole through four innings of play.
The Cyclones found a response in the top of the fifth, started by catcher Kaylee Bosworth. The sophomore notched a single to lead off the inning, and was then pinch run for by Megan Schweitzer. The speedy freshman would steal second later in the inning, and advance to third on a Nebraska throwing error. With two outs, McFarland came up big with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Iowa State held the Nebraska offense at bay throughout the remainder of the game, but was unable to come up with the equalizer in the final two innings.
