AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (16-30, 1-11 Big 12) defeated Oklahoma State (28-16, 8-1 Big 12) in walk-off fashion on Saturday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Freshman Megan Schweitzer raced home from third in the bottom of the seventh inning on a broken squeeze play and was safe at the plate, as the Cyclones picked up their first Big 12 win of the season in a thriller.
Junior Kelsey McFarland launched a grand slam to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning to help the Cyclones erase an early deficit. Sami Williams went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and scored two runs. Schweitzer and Cathlin Bingham both went 2-for-3 and each scored a pair of runs.
Iowa State 10, Oklahoma State 9
Williams launched a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to cut an early deficit in half after OSU had scored twice in the top of the inning. The dinger was Williams' team-leading seventh of the season and her second of the series.
The Cyclones tied the game at 2-2 with another run in the home half of the second. Rachel Hartman started the frame off with a walk, and was then pinch-run for by Schweitzer. The speedy freshman stole second and swiped third later in the inning. An Oklahoma State error on the played allowed her to come home.
Oklahoma State was able to score one run each in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to go ahead 4-2 as ISU came up to bat. Bingham started the inning with her first triple of the season on a shot to right field, and would later come in to score when Williams reached on an OSU error. Iowa State eventually loaded the bases for McFarland, who changed ISU's outlook with a single swing of the bat. The junior crushed a grand slam that cleared the left field wall and gave the Cyclones a 7-4 advantage.
The Cowgirls turned the tables in the top of the sixth, putting together a five-run inning of their own. OSU picked up six base hits and capitalized on a Cyclone error to re-gain the lead at 9-7. However, the story of the game would continue to be ISU's ability to battle back, tying the game at 9-9 with a pair of runs in home half of the sixth. Kirsten Caudle entered to pinch hit and notched a huge double to right field, giving the Cyclones two runners in scoring position. Williams then collected an RBI single, followed by another run scoring on a ground-out for Nychole Antillon.
Relief pitcher Savannah Sanders, who entered late in the top of the sixth, was able to hold the Cowgirls in check in the seventh, preserving the 9-9 tie. Schweitzer led-off the inning with an infield single, and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Kaylee Bosworth. Bingham then bunted for a single to put runners on the corners with one out.
In what would prove to be the deciding play, the Cyclones looked to lay down a squeeze bunt, but were unable to make contact on the play. With Schweitzer caught between third and home, OSU catcher Vanessa Shippy tried to throw her out, gunning the ball to third, but Schweitzer turned the tables and charged home. The freshman was safe at the plate, as Iowa State celebrated its first conference win of the Jamie Trachsel era in dramatic fashion.
