AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (20-32, 3-12 Big 12) took down Western Illinois (19-28, 10-5 Summit), 10-6, on a rainy day at the Cyclone Sports Complex behind a pair of home runs from sophomore Kaylee Bosworth.
Bosworth went 2-for-3 and combined for four RBIs on the two dingers, for the first multi-home run game of her career. Freshmen Talyn Lewis and Megan Schweitzer both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored each, while Sami Williams went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run. The two teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two of the day had to be cancelled due to weather.
Iowa State 10, Western Illinois 6
The Cyclones bounced back from a rocky opening frame, as the Leathernecks came out of the gates fast, hanging four runs on the board in the top of the first. WIU collected four hits, including an RBI triple from Kelsey Marlow, and were also aided by an ISU error, as the visitors took a 4-0 lead.
Iowa State responded in kind, with four runs of their own to make for a wild first inning of action. Kaila Konz was the first Cyclone to cross home plate, as the speedy junior raced in from third on a wild pitch. Schweitzer then notched an RBI single to score Kirsten Caudle, making it a 4-2 lead for the Leathernecks. On the ensuing at-bat, Bosworth drove the ball deep to left center, and two more runs scored on a WIU error.
It was the Kaylee Bosworth show for Iowa State from that point forward, as the native of Manvel, Texas started the fireworks with a two-run bomb in the bottom of the third. Her third home run of the year also brought Lewis home, and gave ISU its first lead of the day at 6-4.
Western Illinois re-tied the contest at 6-6 in the fourth, before the game had to be put on hold due to heavy rains and poor field conditions. Play would be halted for over an hour before the weather cleared enough to resume action.
It was all Cyclones after the break, as Bosworth belted another two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Schweitzer on the play to give ISU an 8-6 advantage. In the home half of the sixth, Lewis gave Iowa State more breathing room, as the freshman connected on a two-RBI single up the middle, extending the lead to 10-6.
Brianna Weilbacher, who entered to pitch in the top of the fifth following the rain delay, got the win by going 3.0 innings while giving up no runs on just one hit, to go with three strikeouts.
