LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State got off to a strong start at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, scoring in four of the six point-offering events. The day's action was highlighted by Thomas Pollard's silver medal in the men's 10,000-meter run. On the women's side, hammer thrower Ariana Kuhn brought home a bronze medal with a career-best effort.
With the three events scored for both the men and women, the Cyclone women are in fourth place in the team standings with 13 points. The ISU men currently sit in seventh with 12 team points.
The 10,000 had two tasks for Thomas Pollard Friday night. Along with the obvious of trying to win a Big 12 crown, there was also a focus on posting a time to qualify for NCAA West Prelims in a race known for being slow and strategic. Greyson Dolezal assured the latter, as he paced the first 3,200 to ensure it would be a quicker race. Around the halfway mark, a pair of Oklahoma State runners made a move to split up the lead group of eight, which Pollard was able to respond to.
The final mile came down to Pollard and Oklahoma State's Hassan Abdi. The Cowboy was able to pull away late, making a big move with 1,200 to go to put himself alone. However, Pollard was able to finish strong and take the silver medal in 29:30.77, which puts him 33rd in the region at the time of publication.
The women's 10,000 played out in a more strategic manner, with a more comfortable pace for the runners. Anne Frisbie was up among the lead pack for the first three-quarters of the race, but the pace picked up and broke up the field. However, the Cyclone sophomore was still able to come home in fifth in a time of 34:15.61.
Ariana Kuhn made a huge statement to close out the women's hammer throw competition, coming back to earn a bronze medal in third with a personal best toss of 198-5. The Cyclone senior was third after three throws, but was pushed down to fourth after the fourth round. On her final effort, Kuhn launched her new personal best of 198-5 to get back up to third and move up a spot to No. 2 in ISU history in the women's hammer throw.
Also in the hammer, Christabel Okeke took seventh with a new personal best of 184-5, earned on her third throw. The junior moved up a spot to No. 9 in ISU history in the event. Tessa Krempel finished eighth with a personal best toss of 172-10. The junior had the two best throws of her career, as her second throw checked in at 172-9 before her fourth throw and new PR.
Trey Achterhoff also notched a personal best in the men's javelin, as he fired his way to a fifth-place finish with a best throw of 201-0. The redshirt senior got off to a strong start with a 184-11 on his first effort, but went big on his second throw, firing the javelin over 200 feet for the first time in his career to 201-0. Achterhoff moves up to seventh in ISU history in the event and is the seventh Cyclone in program history to go over 200 feet in the javelin.
In the decathlon, Wyatt Rhoads is off to the best start of his career, sitting 10th with 3,459 points. That is 102 points over his previous best day one score. His day saw him earn three personal best marks in the 100 (wind-aided 11.25), the high jump (6-0 1/2) and the 400-meter dash (49.80), while just missing his personal best in the long jump (21-0 1/2).
In the heptathlon, Emma Whigham is in ninth after day one at 3,042 points, just 10 out of eighth. She got a pair of all-conditions personal bests on the track today in the 100-meter hurdles (wind-aided 14.34) and the 200-meter dash (wind-aided 24.08). Her score is 16 points behind her day one score from the Drake Relays two weeks ago.
