SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The Iowa State junior golfer Denzel Ieremia posted a fourth-round 81 at the NCAA Championship this afternoon at Rich Harvest Farms.
Ieremia ended the tournament in a tie for 47th with a four-round 295 tally (73-70-71-81).
The Hamilton, New Zealand native was able to prolong his stay at the national meet by being one of the nine low individuals not among the top-15 teams through 54 holes.
Today's final stroke play round determined the individual NCAA champion and the eight teams which will begin match play competition tomorrow.
Ieremia entered the fourth round at -2, but strong winds ballooned the majority of the scores throughout the day.
The junior briefly jumped up the leaderboard by scoring birdies on holes 11 and 13. His remarkable short game was on display again with a chip-in birdie on the par-3 13th hole.
Ieremia's finish is the second-best placing by a Cyclone at the NCAA Championship in school history. Nate McCoy tied for 29th at the 2012 NCAA Championship.
Iowa State was eliminated from the team competition yesterday, falling just four strokes shy of the third round, 15-team cut in a tie for 18th place.
ISU's top-20 finish at nationals is the best by a Cyclone team in the modern era.
