AKRON, Ohio – Iowa State sent three wrestlers to the podium on the final day of the 2017 UWW University Nationals. Redshirt freshman Markus Simmons (third), recently graduated Earl Hall (fourth) and freshman Ian Parker (fifth) all brought home hardware.
In total, Iowa State earned four All-America honors on the weekend with Dante Rodriguez earning a runner-up finish in Greco on Friday.
The road to the third-place bout was long for Simmons. In total, the Broken Arrow, Okla., native wrestled nine matches, posting a record of 8-1. He started the final day with a pair of technical falls to reach the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, he gritted out a 3-3 victory, winning the match on criteria against Minnesota's Daniel Deshazer.
In the third-place match, he was pitted against Jake Rubio, who sent him to the backside of the bracket on day one. In the first period, Rubio was hit with a pair of cautions, putting Simmons up 5-1. The Sooner would pick up four late points to tie the match, but the cautions in the first gave Simmons the decision on criteria and third-place honors.
Both Parker and Hall opened the day with victories in their quarterfinal matches. Parker dropped Pitt's Dom Forys by 6-3 decision and Hall picked up a 10-4 decision over Nebraska's Chad Red.
Hall fell 10-0 to Robbie Mathers by 10-0 technical fall in the semifinals, but bolstered a 14-4 victory over Nebraska's Collin Purinton to reach the consolation finals. There, Clarion's Brock Zacherl knocked off Hall, 10-0.
In his semifinal bout, Parker also lost by 10-0 technical fall, his coming at the hands of Missouri's William Erneste. In the consolation semifinals, Jake Rubio defeated Parker by 5-2 decision, sending the freshman to the fifth-place match, which he won by forfeit.
Iowa State will send four athletes to the World Team Trials next weekend in Lincoln Nebraska. Incoming freshman Austin Gomez and freshmen Kanen Storr and Samuel Colbray have all qualified for the junior division. 2015 NCAA Champion Kyven Gadson will be competing for a spot on the senior team.
