Upcoming Event: Track and Field versus Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on December 4, 2026

02.23.2018 | Track and Field
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field teams had an outstanding first day of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Lied Recreation Athletics Center. ISU brought home three individual titles, with Jhoanmy Luque defending her women's long jump crown and the women's distance medley relay earning its first title since 2014. The ISU men saw Andrew Jordan become the Cyclones' first indoor 5,000-meter run conference champ of the Big 12 era, with teammate Edwin Kurgat finishing second.
The No. 21 Iowa State women lead the team standings after day one with 43 points, while the Iowa State men are second with 37.
In the men's 5,000, Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat and Andrew Jordan put the pressure on the field from the opening gun, taking control of the field from the start and not letting up. The lead pack got cut down to eight, which was then narrow down to a final three of Jordan, Kurgat and OSU's Luis Martinez. The Cyclone duo was able to pull away, with Jordan going inside on lapped traffic to hold off Kurgat from the outside. Nathan Rodiguez made a late charge, but was held off at the line and had to settle for fourth. Jordan's winning time of 14:03.05 moves him to No. 9 in ISU history for the event, while Kurgat's 14:03.50 is good for No. 10 in program history.
The women's distance medley relay was always going to be a showdown between Iowa State and Oklahoma State, and that was exactly what we got. Andrea Grove-McDonough rolled the dice by putting one of the top 800-meter runners in the country, Jasmine Staebler, on the anchor 1,600-meter leg. Staebler and Molly Sughroue of OSU had quite the battle, but Staebler's sprint prevailed as she was able to pull away down the final 200 and win along with Erinn Stenman-Fahey, Emma Whigham and Larkin Chapman running the first three legs. ISU finished in 11:15.73, the No. 5 time in ISU history, to OSU's 11:16.18.
In the women's long jump it was all business for Jhoanmy Luque, as the senior got her fourth Big 12 title via a season-best effort of 21-1 1/4 (6.43m). Her four legal jumps were the four longest of the entire competition. Luque's effort moves her to No. 5 in Division I on the season. She will go for her second-straight horizontal jumps sweep tomorrow in the triple jump.
The Iowa State men got a trio of outstanding performances in the men's weight throw. Vlad Pavlenko was already in bronze-medal position after a third-throw of 65-9 3/4 (20.06m), but he had other things in mind as he closed his day in style with a bomb of a throw of 68-9 3/4 (20.97m) to put his name onto the ISU record boards. Pavlenko took down Zac Brouilette's previous school record of 68-3 1/4, set nine years ago.
Also in the men's weight throw, Chris Celona scored for ISU for the third-straight year with a best throw of 60-0 1/2 (18.30m), moving up a spot to No. 8 in ISU history for the event. Despite missing out on scoring, Brett Peters had the three best throws of his Cyclone career, capped by a 57-2 3/4 (17.44m).
The women's team score account was opened by Christabel Okeke for the second-straight season. Despite being ginger with a tweaked back, Okeke fired a third throw of 65-7 (19.99m) to climb up to third place. Her bronze-medal effort, which came via a three-and-a-half-foot personal best moved the senior up to No. 3 in Iowa State history for the event.
Back on the track, the men's and women's teams combined to advance 12 runners to tomorrow's finals.
