LINCOLN, Neb. – The Iowa State tennis team (7-3, 0-0 Big 12) went 1-1 on its final day in Nebraska, falling 4-0 to No. 42 Nebraska and edging the Omaha, 4-3, at the Dillon Tennis Center.
In its match against Omaha, ISU captured two wins in doubles action. Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola edged Michelle Lo and Janelle Wilson, 7-6 (5) at the No. 1 position. No. 2 doubles duo Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna won their match, 6-1, against Savanna Crowell and Natalie Lorentz, while Margarita Timakova and Ekaterina Repina, who played at the No. 3 spot, fell 7-5 to Mavericks Marie Karelevich and Emily Behling.
In singles action, ISU grabbed three wins, with No. 1 singles player Espindola defeating Michelle Lo, 7-5, 6-1. Timakova, who played at the No. 3 position, grabbed a victory over Marie Karelevich, winning 7-6, 7-5. Bonadonna defeated Natalie Lorentz, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Playing at the No. 2 singles spot was Repina, who faced a hard match against Janelle Wilson, falling 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. Karen Alvarez played at the No. 5 position, facing Emily Behling. She was unable to come out with a win, falling 6-1, 6-2.
In its first match of the day, ISU fell 4-0 to the nationally-ranked Cornhuskers. The Cyclones were unable to find a win in doubles action. Doubles duo Maty Cancini and Espindola, who played at the No. 1 spot, fell 7-5 to Brianna Lashway and P. Del Cueto Castillo. Meanwhile, No. 2 doubles pair Erin Freeman and Bonadonna lost their doubles match to Claire Reifeis and Haley Haakenstad, 6-2. At the No. 3 position, Repina and Timakova fell 7-5 to Cornhuskers Katerina Matysova and Vasanti Shinde.
ISU was absent of any victories in singles action, and three matches went unfinished. Cancini went 4-6, 6-0, 2-1 versus Lashway at the No. 1 spot. Espindola, who played at the No. 2 singles position, went 7-5, 4-4 in an unfinished match, while Bonadonna went 6-7, 4-1 against M'Balia Bangoura at the No. 6 spot in another match that wasn't finished. Freeman played at the No. 3 singles position, falling to Reifeis, 6-2, 6-1. Repina couldn't bounce back in her match, playing at the No. 4 spot, which went into three sets against Castillo. Repina lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Margarita Timakova also lost her match, falling to Matysova, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles position.
The Cyclones will head to Jacksonville, Florida to face North Florida on March 2, followed by Mercer on March 3.
