STOCKTON, Calif. – The Iowa State men's golf will return to the NCAA Championship for the second-straight season and for the third time in the last five years.
Iowa State reached the pinnacle of college golf by finishing third at the NCAA Stockton Regional at 847, carding a 3-under 285 in the final round this afternoon. The top five teams advanced to the NCAA Championship, as the Cyclones had a 10-shot cushion over No. 6 LSU, the first team to miss the cut.
Entering the tournament as the No. 10 seed and one of five teams ranked outside the top-50 in the 13-team field, the Cyclones shocked the college golfing community yet again. ISU led after 18 holes and shared the lead heading into the final round today.
The Cyclones fell just short of winning their first NCAA Regional, as Kansas edged the Cyclones by three shots (844). ISU's third-place finish tied for the best showing in a NCAA postseason event in school history.
Iowa State is now among 30 teams to advance to the NCAA Championship, May 25-30 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. This marks the third time in school history (2014, 2017) the Cyclones have qualified for the NCAA finals since the Regional format was implemented in 1990.
"I'm just thrilled for our guys to get a chance to compete again together," Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said. "We are playing some great golf. This (NCAA Championship) was one of our goals, and I'm just really excited we get the opportunity to play in the finals."
It was a total team effort by the Cyclones. Sophomore Sam Vincent led the way by tying for fifth with a career-low 208 in the medalist race. Vincent posted three-straight rounds under par, including a 70 this afternoon to notch his third top-10 finish of the season.
Vincent, who tied for seventh at the Big 12 Championship, is averaging 70.7 strokes in his last seven rounds (71-70-72-73-69-69-70).
"Sam has done an incredible job of sticking with it through a challenging year," Tank said. "To see him playing high quality golf like we know he's capable of is really rewarding. He has been hitting great shots, making solid decisions and his short game has been backing him up when he needs it."
Senior Denzel Ieremia joined Vincent in the top-10 (8th) with a three-round 210 tally (68-68-74). His pair of 68s in the first two rounds increases his team-best season total of sub-70 rounds to 10.
Vincent and Ieremia are the sixth and seventh Cyclones to place in the top-10 at a NCAA Regional (Nate McCoy- 7th in 2012; Scott Fernandez- T6th in 2014; Sam Daley- T10th in 2015; Nick Voke- 1st in 2017; Ruben Sondjaja- T10th in 2017).
Freshman Lachlan Barker fired a 70 today to tie for 19th at 214. Barker made an amazing comeback during the tournament by going -6 in his final 26 holes.
Frank Lindwall carded a 72 this afternoon to tie for 30th at 216 and Tripp Kinney fired a 73 to tie for 56th at 222.
"I think we just focused on being ourselves and playing our game for the whole week," Tank said about his team's strong performance. "We tried to not worry too much about where we stood. We didn't talk about where we stood or anything. Our goal was as each day went on to be more relaxed and free. I think we did that pretty well."
The Cyclones are one of seven Big 12 teams to advance to the 30-team NCAA Championship field (Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas).
How the Cyclones got here is simply amazing. Ranked No. 88 nationally in February, Iowa State was virtually an afterthought to make NCAA postseason play. However, the Cyclones posted one of the greatest turnarounds in school history by winning a pair of tournaments (Colleton River Intercollegiate, Hawkeye Invitational) and placing fourth or better in its last five tournaments.
Included in this run was a fourth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship, tying for the second-best finish in league history. Iowa State posted a 50-8 record and defeated 20 teams ranked in the top-50 down the stretch.
