EUGENE, Oregon – Iowa State's
Edwin Kurgat earned First Team All-America honors with his seventh place finish in the men's 5,000-meter run Friday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Kurgat crossed the Hayward Field line in 13:58.02, becoming the first ISU All-American outdoors at 5,000 in 24 years.
Kurgat's seventh place effort earned Iowa State two team points for the competition, allowing the Cyclones to finish tied for 62nd in the team standings.
Kurgat is Iowa State's first All-American at 5,000-meters at the Outdoor Championships since John Kihonge finished sixth in 1994. The Kenayn earned his first All-American honor as a Cyclone and second of his career, adding to his cross country All-America honor he earned while at UT-Martin in Fall 2017.
A slow pace meant Kurgat was able to preserve his energy at the back of the field for the first half of the contest. He began to sneak his way up the field in the latter stages, as he put himself in the middle of the pack heading into the final mile of racing.
The pack began to break up, but Kurgat was able to stick with the contenders, allowing him to move up into the First Team All-America reconing. Though he lost the guys battling for the national title heading into the final corner, he was able to make a pass on the front stretch to move up a spot to his final slot of seventh in 13:58.02.
